Backyard Boredom Busters
With this new normal, you may be finding yourself with a bit of extra free time around the house! We are in the same boat, and since the weather is getting nicer, here are a few activities to help you kill time with the kids! The best part is that you probably have the necessary equipment or supplies around the house!
- Scavenger Hunt
Make a list of either odds and ends around the yard or objects of specific shapes or colors to find.
Add birds, frogs, or squirrels to the list and have the kids take pictures of items as they see them.
- Bird Watching
Grab a pair of binoculars and a bird book, or simply peek out your window!
Now is a great time to see all sorts of birds!
- Homemade Bird Feeder
Use birdseed or nuts and seeds on a peanut butter-coated pinecone to attract those feathered friends!
Fun and easy, this craft is one the kids will love!
- Sidewalk Chalk
Every kid (and kid at heart!) loves to create with chalk.
Whether it's drawing masterful pieces of artwork or creating a chalk city with roads for bikes and scooters,
the possibilities are endless!

- Sports
This idea might be so apparent that you have already exhausted it.
If that is the case, have the kids invent a new sport or game!
Let them use any materials and sporting equipment, and their imaginations will run wild!
Just be sure to have them make a rule book too, in case of any dispute!
- Mud Pies
There is nothing wrong with getting a little dirty!
Creating mud pies also provides the perfect opportunity to play "restaurant."
- Obstacle Course
Use your playset, old tires, and anything you can find to create an obstacle course!
If the kids are older, record the fastest times through the course!
- Picnic
Bringing out the blankets for a picnic never gets old!
Make it fancy or casual, but be sure to include lots of special treats!
- Mini-Golf Course
Similar to the obstacle course, use any materials and get creative!
Paper cups dug into the ground work well for holes, just make sure to clean it up when finished!
