This Seattle backyard presented a unique challenge: a steep slope, limited usable space, and strict city regulations aimed at preventing erosion and protecting existing trees. Our team worked closely with the homeowners and city officials to implement a thoughtful design that stabilized the landscape while creating a series of flat, livable outdoor spaces. Strategic retaining walls and carefully selected plantings now protect the hillside from runoff and root loss, preserving the integrity of the yard and its natural surroundings.
At the heart of the design is a beautifully integrated rain garden, engineered to capture and manage stormwater across the property. As rainfall moves through the landscape, it’s directed through planted beds and catch areas in a way that’s both functional and visually striking. Despite the technical constraints, the final design features a cozy fire pit, an inviting hot tub, and a dedicated dining area, all positioned to capitalize on the now-stabilized slope without compromising comfort or style.
This project showcases Alderwood Landscaping’s ability to tackle complex terrain and city requirements, while delivering elegant and usable outdoor living spaces.
